Serve. Honor. Protect.

These are the core values of our Philadelphia Police Department. And yesterday, Sergeant Wilson was laid to rest after inhaling his last breath while serving, honoring, and protecting those in Game Stop on that fateful snowy night of March 5, 2015.

Nowadays, people throw around the word "hero" so loosely. However, it was Sergeant Wilson's act of valor that ensured no other patron or employee was injured in this unnecessary gun battle. He laid his life on the line when cowards decided not to respect his authority and would attempt to "evade" the law by any means possible. Heart wrenching to say the least. My worse nightmare came true for his two sons...their father never made it home from work.

With everything going on in our world, I think people forget the sacrifice our cops make on a daily basis. They leave their families to protect and serve their community - and they know the risk of their job...they may not come home at night, although they all hope they do. With this sacrifice, these officers encounter so much disrespect. Instead of being so negative towards police, thank one if you see them. Smile at them. Pray for them or with them. Hug them. They could use the encouragement and support.

I am still in a state of shock this has happened to one of our officers again. Yet I admire the passion and dedication Sergeant Wilson had to his job. Others should strive to emulate his passion in their lives by believing in something and trying to make a difference in the lives of others.

Sergeant Wilson gave his all. His heroic actions resulted in him paying the ultimate sacrifice. It does not go unnoticed - we salute you Sergeant Wilson. Job well done. Thank you for your service. May you find eternal peace.

  1. I just posted an amazing and thoughtful comment and it disappeared. Anyway, the summary is this: whenever you need a hug because you worry and worry and worry, even if I can't imagine what that feels like, just say the word!
